How to Change Your YouTube Channel Name and Handle (2026)

How to Change Your YouTube Channel Name and Handle (2026) - cover image

Maybe you picked a name years ago that no longer fits, you are rebranding for a new niche, or you just bought a channel and want to make it yours. YouTube lets you change both your channel name and your @handle in a couple of minutes. But there are limits on how often you can do it, and one change can cost you your verification badge. Here is how it works.

Quick answer: on a computer, open YouTube Studio, click Customization, then Profile, type a new name or handle and click Publish. On mobile, open your channel in the YouTube app and tap Edit. You can change the name twice and the handle twice within any 14-day period.

Channel name vs handle: what's the difference?

People often mix these up when they search for how to change their YouTube username. YouTube actually has two separate identifiers, and you can change them independently:

In short: the channel name is your display name, the one viewers read. The handle is your address on YouTube. Changing your name does not change your handle, and changing your handle does not change your name. Your channel ID, subscribers, videos and watch hours stay the same either way.

How to change your YouTube channel name on desktop

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio at studio.youtube.com with the account that owns the channel.
  2. In the left menu, click Customization.
  3. Open the Profile tab.
  4. Under Name, type your new channel name.
  5. Click Publish in the top right corner.

YouTube says it may take a few days for the new name to update and display everywhere on YouTube, so do not worry if old videos or search results still show the previous name for a while.

Can't save the new name? YouTube's own fix: delete any channel name translations first (they are in the same Profile area, under the language settings), then try again.

How to change your YouTube handle on desktop

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, click Customization, then Profile.
  3. Under Handle, type the new handle you want. YouTube checks right away whether it is available.
  4. Click Publish to confirm.

You can also go straight to youtube.com/handle to view and edit it. If your first choice is taken, YouTube suggests adding periods, numbers or underscores. A handle generator can help you find a short, available option faster.

How to change your channel name and handle on mobile

You can make the same changes from your phone in the YouTube app. The menu labels move around between app versions, but the path is the same on iPhone and Android:

  1. Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture (the You tab at the bottom).
  2. Tap your channel name or View channel to open your channel page.
  3. Tap Edit (the pencil icon) to open your channel settings.
  4. Tap Name to change the channel name, or Handle to change the handle (some versions show a pencil icon next to each).
  5. Type the new name or handle and tap Save.

In the YouTube Studio app, tap your profile picture and look for the option to edit your channel profile; the name and handle fields are there too. If neither app shows the option, open studio.youtube.com in your phone's browser and follow the desktop steps.

How often can you change your YouTube channel name?

YouTube's current rules, from its help center:

  • Channel name: "You can change your channel name twice within a 14-day period."
  • Handle: "You can change your handle twice within a 14-day period."

The two limits are separate, so you can change your name twice and your handle twice in the same two weeks. After that you have to wait until the 14-day window passes. Pick your final name before you start, because a typo fix counts as a change.

What happens to your old handle and links

When you change your handle, YouTube holds your previous handle for 14 days so you can switch back. During those 14 days, both your old handle URL and your new one work. After that, the old handle can be taken by any other channel, and links that use it may stop pointing to you.

  • Update the link in your social bios, website, email signature and business cards.
  • Update links in your video descriptions and pinned comments, especially on your most-viewed videos.
  • Use your channel ID link (youtube.com/channel/UC...) anywhere a link must never break. It does not change when you rename.
  • Tell your audience in a Community post or a short video so they recognise the new name.

Tips for choosing a new name and handle

Because you only get two changes every 14 days, it pays to settle on the final name before you open YouTube Studio. A good YouTube channel name is easy to say, easy to spell and tells new viewers what the channel is about.

  • Keep it short. Long names get cut off on phones, under videos and in search results.
  • Make the name and handle match as closely as possible, so people who hear the name can find the channel.
  • Avoid names that copy another creator or a brand. Besides policy risk, it makes you hard to find in search.
  • Search YouTube for the name first. If a big channel already uses it, you will be competing with them in search.
  • Check the same handle on TikTok, Instagram and X so your brand is consistent everywhere.
  • Say it out loud. If you have to spell it for people, pick something simpler.

Does changing your name remove the verification badge?

Yes, if you change the channel name. YouTube is clear: "If you change your channel name, the renamed channel won't be verified, and you'll need to reapply." To reapply, a channel generally needs 100,000 subscribers, and YouTube decides again whether to grant the badge.

Changing only the handle is safe: "Changing your channel's handle will not remove your verification badge." If you are verified and only want a new URL, change the handle and leave the name alone.

Does changing your channel name affect monetization?

YouTube's help pages for changing your name and handle do not list any effect on monetization. Your subscribers, watch hours and Shorts views belong to the channel, not to its name, so a rename does not reset them. Monetization is reviewed against the channel's content and policies, not its display name.

What can cause problems is the new name itself. Your channel name still has to follow YouTube's Community Guidelines, so a name that impersonates another creator or brand, or misleads viewers, can lead to action against the channel, including its monetization. Choose a name that is clearly your own.

Remember: a channel name is not the same as your AdSense payee name or your Google Account name. Renaming the channel does not change who gets paid.

Bought a channel? Rename it the right way

Rebranding is one of the first things most buyers do after a channel transfer. A few points make it smoother:

  1. Wait until ownership is fully moved to your own Google account before you rename anything.
  2. Plan the new name and handle together, so you use as few of your changes as possible.
  3. Change the name first, then the handle, then update your banner, profile picture and links.
  4. Keep the niche the same at first. A new name is fine, but a sudden switch of topic can confuse the existing audience and the recommendation system.
  5. Note that YouTube does not allow the sale or transfer of handles on their own, so treat the handle as part of the channel, not a separate asset.
