YouTube's 8,000 Watch Hours Rule (2027): How Many Views Is That?

For years the magic number on YouTube was 4,000 watch hours. From February 1, 2027 it doubles to 8,000 for new channels. That sounds like a small change on paper, but in real views and real days it is a big jump. Here is what the rule says, how many views 8,000 watch hours actually takes, and what your options are.

What YouTube announced
On August 10, 2026 YouTube announced that, from February 1, 2027, new applicants for ad and Premium revenue sharing will need 8,000 public watch hours (up from 4,000) or 20 million public Shorts views (up from 10 million). The 1,000 subscriber requirement stays the same. Channels that are already in the Partner Program keep their status.
| Requirement | Until Jan 31, 2027 | From Feb 1, 2027 |

What does 8,000 watch hours mean?
Watch hours are the total time people spend watching your public long-form videos in the last 12 months. 8,000 hours is 480,000 minutes. It does not matter if that comes from many short visits or a few long ones, only the total counts. Watch time from Shorts in the Shorts feed does not count toward public watch hours, and private, unlisted or deleted videos do not count either.
How many views is 8,000 watch hours?

It depends on your average view duration, the average time each viewer watches. Divide 480,000 minutes by your average view duration and you get the views you need:
| Average view duration | Views for 4,000 hours (old) | Views for 8,000 hours (2027) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 minutes | 120,000 | 240,000 |
| 4 minutes | 60,000 | 120,000 |
| 6 minutes | 40,000 | 80,000 |
| 8 minutes | 30,000 | 60,000 |
| 10 minutes | 24,000 | 48,000 |
Simple math: 8,000 hours x 60 = 480,000 minutes, divided by average view duration. Real numbers vary per channel.
How long is 8,000 watch hours per day?
Spread over 12 months, 8,000 hours is about 22 hours of watch time every single day, or roughly 1,315 minutes a day. With a 4-minute average view, that is around 330 views per day, every day, for a full year. Under the old rule it was half that.
How to reach 8,000 watch hours faster
- Make longer videos (8 to 15 minutes) in a niche where people actually watch long content.
- Hook viewers in the first 30 seconds. Average view duration matters more than raw views.
- Use playlists and end screens so one view turns into two or three.
- Post on a schedule. One strong long video a week beats random uploads.
- Check YouTube Studio > Analytics > Audience retention and fix where people drop off.
Should you apply before February 1, 2027?
If your channel already has 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 public watch hours (or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days), it is worth applying before the new rules start, because channels already in the program are not affected by the higher thresholds. If you are far from 4,000 hours today, the 8,000-hour bar can mean many extra months of work. The other route is to start with a channel that is already in the Partner Program, so the new thresholds do not apply to you.
Is YouTube changing 4,000 watch hours to 8,000?
Yes, for new applicants. From February 1, 2027, new channels need 8,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 20 million public Shorts views in 90 days, plus 1,000 subscribers.
