How to Get 4,000 Watch Hours on YouTube Fast (2026)

4,000 public watch hours is the part of the YouTube Partner Program that stops most channels. It is 240,000 minutes of people watching your public long videos inside a rolling 12 months. The fastest honest way to get there is not more uploads, it is more minutes per view. Here is the maths, nine methods that move the number, and how to track it.
What 4,000 watch hours looks like in views
| Average watch time per view | Views needed for 4,000 hours | Views per day over 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| 2 minutes | 120,000 | About 329 |
| 4 minutes | 60,000 | About 164 |
| 6 minutes | 40,000 | About 110 |
| 8 minutes | 30,000 | About 82 |
| 12 minutes | 20,000 | About 55 |
Our maths: 240,000 minutes divided by the average minutes watched per view, then by 365 days.
The table shows why watch time per view matters more than views. A channel at 2 minutes needs six times the views of a channel at 12 minutes.
How long 4,000 hours usually takes
There is no standard time. The useful test is your monthly average: you need about 333 public watch hours a month to reach 4,000 inside the 12-month window. At 150 hours a month you never get there, because old hours drop off as fast as new ones arrive. Doing it in 30 days means about 133 hours a day, which usually takes a long video that goes viral or long public live streams.
What counts, in short
Only public long videos, and live streams saved as public videos, from the last 12 months count. Shorts feed watch time, private, unlisted and deleted videos, and views from Google Ads campaigns do not.
9 ways to get watch hours faster
- Make longer videos. 10 to 20 minutes gives each view room to add real watch time. Example: if viewers watch about 40% of a video, a 15-minute video earns about 6 minutes per view, while a 5-minute one earns 2. Only go long when the topic genuinely needs it, or people leave early and the average falls.
- Hook viewers in the first 30 seconds. Most drop-off happens at the start, so the opening decides your average. Start with the result or the question, skip long intros and logos, and show what the viewer will get.
- Cut slow parts. Open YouTube Studio, go to a video's Analytics and check the audience retention graph. Every dip shows where people leave. Fix those patterns in the next video: shorter setup, fewer tangents, faster cuts.
- Group videos into playlists. A viewer who finishes one video in a playlist goes straight to the next. If one view turns into three, you have tripled the hours without new viewers. Order playlists so each video leads naturally into the next.
- Use end screens and cards. Point the end screen at your best-performing related video, not your newest. A card halfway through can send viewers to the next part before they leave.
- Choose topics people search for. Tutorials, reviews, explainers and how-tos keep getting views for months, so a video from January is still adding hours in December. Trending topics spike and then stop.
- Make deep dives and updated versions. Turn a popular short video into a longer, more complete version, or combine a series into one long guide with new commentary. The new video must add real value, or it counts as reused content at review.
- Go live and keep the stream public afterwards. A two-hour stream that 30 people watch for an hour each adds 30 hours at once, and the saved video keeps adding more. Unlisted or deleted streams do not count.
- Use Shorts as a funnel, not a source. Shorts feed watch time does not count, but a Short can send new viewers to a related long video. Link it as the related video on the Short.
An example 90-day plan
This is an example plan, not a guarantee. It suits a channel that already uploads but sits well below 4,000 hours.
| Weeks | Focus | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Find what works | Sort videos by watch time in Analytics. Note your three best topics and their average view duration. |
| 3–6 | Make more of the winners | Upload one longer video a week on your best topic. Rework the first 30 seconds using the retention graph. |
| 7–10 | Connect the library | Build two or three playlists, add end screens to every video, and add cards to your top ten. |
| 11–13 | Add a bulk source | Run one or two public live streams on your topic, and link your long videos from your Shorts. |
Track monthly public watch hours each month. You need about 333 a month on average to finish in 12 months.
How to check your watch hours in YouTube Studio
- Click Earn in YouTube Studio to see your official progress toward 4,000 public watch hours.
- For trends, open Analytics, choose the last 365 days and look at watch time for long videos.
- Open Analytics for each video and compare average view duration and audience retention. These two numbers tell you which methods are working.
Do Google Ads promotions help?
Not directly. YouTube Help says watch time from ad campaigns does not count toward public watch hours. A small campaign can bring people who subscribe and come back on their own, and those later views do count, but you are paying for something the counter ignores.
Why you should not buy watch hours
Sites that sell 4,000 hours usually loop your videos with bots or low-quality traffic. YouTube's fake engagement policy bans this, YouTube filters it out, and reviewers check the channel before approving it.
The target doubles in 2027
From 1 February 2027, new channels need 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, plus 1,000 subscribers. Source for the 2027 numbers: YouTube Official Blog, 10 August 2026 (blog.youtube/news-and-events/youtube-partner-program-updates-2027-new-opportunities-earn). Channels already in the program are not affected by the new entry threshold, so finishing 4,000 before that date saves months.
The shortcut most people do not consider
Instead of chasing 4,000 hours, you can start with a channel that already passed the review. Within 12–24 hours your own Gmail is added as an owner of the channel. YouTube lets a new owner become primary owner after 7 days, and we help you take primary ownership and remove every other owner. You still need to upload videos for it to earn.
How many views do I need for 4,000 watch hours?
It depends on watch time per view. At 4 minutes per view you need about 60,000 views; at 8 minutes about 30,000; at 12 minutes about 20,000.
How many hours a day is 4,000 watch hours?
About 11 hours of public watch time a day across your whole channel, every day for 12 months.
Can I get 4,000 watch hours in 30 days?
It is possible with a long video that goes viral or long public live streams, but rare. It means about 133 hours of watch time a day.
What video length is best for watch hours?
Long enough to cover the topic properly without padding. For many channels that is 8 to 20 minutes. Average view duration matters more than length alone.
Do playlists help with watch hours?
Yes. Playlists play the next video automatically, so one viewer can add the watch time of several videos in one session.
