How Long Does It Take to Get Monetized on YouTube? (2026)

How Long Does It Take to Get Monetized on YouTube? (2026) - cover image
Quick answer: there is no set time to reach 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 public watch hours. To do it within the rolling 12 months, you need about 333 public watch hours a month on average. After you apply, YouTube says a decision usually comes in about one month. After approval, your first payment arrives between the 21st and 26th of the month after your balance reaches the payment threshold. From 1 February 2027, new applicants need 8,000 qualified watch hours or 20 million qualified Shorts views, so stage one gets longer.

Getting monetized on YouTube happens in three stages: reaching the Partner Program thresholds, waiting for YouTube's review, and waiting for your first payment. Only the first stage has no fixed length, and it is where most channels spend months or years.

2. YouTube reviewAbout one month, sometimes longerQueue size and whether your channel needs more than one review
3. First paymentAbout 1 to 2 months after approval, or longer for small balancesThe monthly payment cycle and the payment threshold

Stages 2 and 3 are based on YouTube Help. Stage 1 depends entirely on your channel.

Stage 1: how long it takes to reach the thresholds

For ad revenue a channel needs 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days. The detail that decides your timeline is the rolling window. Hours older than 12 months drop off, so a slow channel can keep growing and never arrive.

The simplest way to estimate your own timeline is your average public watch hours per month. You can find it in YouTube Studio Analytics.

Average public watch hours per monthTime to 4,000 hoursVerdict
150Never inside 12 months (tops out near 1,800)Change format or video length first
333About 12 monthsJust enough
500About 8 monthsRealistic for a steady weekly uploader
1,000About 4 monthsFast
2,000About 2 monthsUsually one or two videos taking off

Our own maths: 4,000 divided by monthly hours, assuming steady growth. Real channels grow unevenly, usually faster later.

Example: 333 hours a month is 20,000 minutes. If viewers watch 4 minutes on average, you need about 5,000 views a month. If they watch 8 minutes, about 2,500. That is why video length and retention change the timeline more than upload count.

The Shorts path is different. 10 million views in 90 days is about 111,000 views a day. Channels with a few viral Shorts can get there in weeks, while most Shorts channels never reach it inside one 90-day window.

Stage 2: how long the YouTube review takes

Once you apply in YouTube Studio, a person checks your channel against YouTube's monetization policies. YouTube Help says you will usually get a decision in about one month, and it can take longer when many channels are applying or yours needs more than one review.

You cannot speed up the review. What you can do is make it go smoothly: remove clearly reused or copyrighted videos before you apply, make sure your newest uploads reflect the channel, and link a working AdSense account.

Stage 3: from approval to your first payment

Approval does not mean money tomorrow. YouTube pays once a month through AdSense for YouTube, and according to YouTube Help the cycle works like this:

  1. Between the 7th and 12th of each month, your estimated earnings for the previous month are finalized and added to your balance.
  2. On the 20th, your total balance must reach the payment threshold for your currency, and any payment details must be complete.
  3. Between the 21st and 26th, the payment is issued.
  4. It then takes time to arrive: YouTube Help says up to 7 business days by bank transfer (EFT), up to 15 for a wire transfer, and 2 to 4 weeks for a check.

Worked example: a channel is approved on 10 March and earns from that day. March earnings are finalized in early April. If the balance is over the threshold on 20 April, payment is issued between 21 and 26 April. The money lands in late April or early May, about six to eight weeks after approval.

Small channels wait longer. Balances below the threshold roll over to the next month. YouTube Help uses $100 as its example threshold. If that is your threshold and you earn $40 a month, your balance only passes it after three months of earnings, so the first payment is issued about three months after approval.

Two more things can add weeks: the PIN that YouTube mails to verify your address, which YouTube Help says can take 3 to 4 weeks to arrive, and missing tax information.

If you are rejected: how much time it adds

A rejection resets part of the clock. After a first rejection you can appeal within 21 days or reapply after 30 days. After a later rejection, YouTube Help says the wait is 90 days. Add another review of about a month on top.

The 2027 change makes stage one longer

From 1 February 2027, new applicants need 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, double today's targets. Source for the 2027 numbers: YouTube Official Blog, 10 August 2026 (blog.youtube/news-and-events/youtube-partner-program-updates-2027-new-opportunities-earn). In the table above, every row takes twice as long. Because review takes about a month, a channel that becomes eligible in late January has the least margin, so apply as soon as Studio lets you.

What actually speeds it up

  1. Raise watch time per view. One 12-minute video that holds viewers for 6 minutes adds as much as three videos that hold them for 2.
  2. Upload on a schedule. Weekly or more gives YouTube more chances to test your videos.
  3. Pick topics people search for, so videos keep getting views months later instead of fading after a week.
  4. Use Shorts to find subscribers and long videos to build watch hours.
  5. Avoid anything that breaks the rules, such as bought views or reused clips. A rejection costs more time than it saves.

Can you skip the wait?

Yes, by starting with a channel that is already in the YouTube Partner Program. YouTube lets the owner of a Brand Account channel add other owners and hand over primary ownership, which is how a monetized channel changes hands.

Within 12–24 hours your own Gmail is added as an owner of the channel. YouTube lets a new owner become primary owner after 7 days, and we help you take primary ownership and remove every other owner. You skip stages one and two. Stage three still applies, because payments run on the same monthly AdSense cycle, and earnings depend on the videos you upload.

Monetized YouTube channels already approved for the Partner Program: $399.99 for a channel with an Asian & Worldwide audience or $499.99 for a US, UK & Europe audience. Delivered within 12–24 hours, with ownership moved to your own Gmail. 30-day replacement or refund, plus 30 days of support.See monetized YouTube channels →
