New activity rules for channels already monetized

Infographic: 3 ways to stay active in the YouTube Partner Program from 2027: 1,000 watch hours in 365 days, 1M Shorts views in 90 days, or 2 videos or 5 Shorts every 90 days
Monetized channels only need to meet one of these three activity rules.

From February 1, 2027, a monetized channel counts as active if it meets any one of these. Channels below the line get a 90-day window to catch up.

  • 1,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or
  • 1 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, or
  • 2 long-form videos or 5 Shorts uploaded every 90 days.

What the numbers mean for creators

  • Every new channel now needs twice the watch time before its first ad dollar. At about 22 hours of watch time a day, that is a full year of steady growth for most small channels.
  • Shorts-only channels need about 222,000 views a day for 90 days straight, which few new channels reach.
  • Channels already in the program are protected from the new entry bar, which makes existing monetized channels more valuable.
  • Even partners must stay active: one upload rhythm of 2 long videos or 5 Shorts every 90 days is enough.
