Why RPM is lower than CPM

  • YouTube keeps 45% of long-video ad revenue; creators keep 55%.
  • Not every view shows an ad, but RPM counts every view.
  • RPM adds YouTube Premium and other revenue, so it is not only ads.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CPM and RPM on YouTube?

CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions, before YouTube's share. RPM is what you actually earn per 1,000 video views, after YouTube's share and counting views that showed no ad. That's why RPM is always lower than CPM.

How do I calculate YouTube RPM from CPM?

Multiply your CPM by the share of views that showed ads and by 55% (the creator share for long videos). Example: $10 CPM × 60% × 55% = $3.30 RPM.

What is a good RPM on YouTube?

For long videos most channels keep about $1 to $10 per 1,000 views. Finance, business and tech videos with US or UK viewers are usually at the top of that range; gaming, music and kids content at the bottom.

Where do I find my RPM and CPM?

YouTube Studio → Analytics → Revenue shows RPM, and the Revenue tab also shows CPM and playback-based CPM.

Do Shorts have the same RPM?

No. Shorts revenue comes from a shared pool, and creators keep 45% of their allocated share, so Shorts RPM is usually only a few cents per 1,000 views.
