Is Buying a YouTube Channel Worth It in 2027? Costs, Risks & Math

From 1 February 2027, getting a new YouTube channel into the Partner Program gets twice as hard. That single change is making a lot of creators ask the same question: is it worth buying a YouTube channel instead of building one? The honest answer is "it depends on your plan". This guide runs the real numbers for 2027, the risks most sellers skip, and a simple way to decide.
What changes in 2027
| Partner Program requirement | Until 31 Jan 2027 | From 1 Feb 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Subscribers | 1,000 | 1,000 |
| Public watch hours (last 12 months) | 4,000 | 8,000 |
| Or Shorts views (last 90 days) | 10 million | 20 million |
| Channels already monetized | Not affected | Not affected |
From YouTube's announcement on the YouTube Official Blog (10 August 2026). See our full breakdown of the 8,000 watch hours rule.
Build vs buy: the 2027 math
| Build from zero (2027 rules) | Buy a monetized channel | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to first ad revenue | Often 12+ months | Your first upload after transfer |
| Watch hours needed | 8,000 (about 120,000 views at 4 min each) | None, already approved |
| Upfront cost | $0 plus your time, tools and editing | $399.99 – $499.99 (our prices) |
| Risk | May never reach the bar | Seller, policy and transfer risk (see below) |
| Best for | Patient creators testing a niche | Creators with a content plan ready now |
8,000 hours = 480,000 minutes. At a 4-minute average view duration that is about 120,000 views. Your numbers depend on your niche and video length.
A useful way to judge the price: what would one year of your time be worth? If you would spend 10 hours a week for a year getting to 8,000 hours, that is about 500 hours of work before the channel earns a cent. If your content plan can earn even a few hundred dollars a month once monetized, buying usually pays back within a few months.
When buying a YouTube channel is NOT worth it
- You don't have a content plan. A monetized channel with no new videos earns almost nothing.
- You plan to reupload other people's videos. YouTube's reused-content policy can demonetize the channel.
- The seller only offers a password, not an ownership transfer to your Gmail.
- The channel has bought subscribers, strikes or a completely unrelated old niche.
- The price is far above what the channel's views could earn back.
The real risks (and how to cut them)
- Seller takes it back: make sure your Gmail becomes primary owner after YouTube's 7-day wait and every other owner is removed.
- Policy risk: channels still have to follow YouTube's monetization policies after the sale, including the rules on reused and AI content.
- Audience mismatch: a channel's past audience may not watch your new niche, so expect to rebuild momentum.
- Payment risk: pay only through traceable methods and get the refund policy in writing.
Monetized or aged: which should you buy in 2027?
A monetized channel is already in the Partner Program, so it earns from your first upload and is not affected by the 2027 thresholds. An aged channel is cheaper ($24.99 to $34.99) and has history, but it is not monetized, so it would still have to meet the new 8,000-hour bar to earn ad revenue. If the goal is income in 2027, monetized is the one that skips the new rule.
Is it worth buying a YouTube channel in 2027?
Yes, if you have a content plan and want to earn sooner. From 1 February 2027 new channels need 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views, while channels already monetized are not affected.
Do bought channels have to meet the 2027 requirements?
Not if they are already in the YouTube Partner Program. YouTube says the update does not affect creators already in the program, as long as the channel keeps following its policies.
How much does a monetized YouTube channel cost in 2027?
Ours cost $399.99 for an Asian & Worldwide audience and $499.99 for a US, UK & Europe audience. Marketplace prices vary widely.
Is it legal to buy a YouTube channel?
In most countries it is a private sale of a digital asset, and YouTube lets owners add and remove channel owners. This is not legal advice.
Is an aged channel enough in 2027?
Only if you plan to grow it yourself. Aged channels are not monetized, so they still need 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views under the 2027 rules.
