How YouTube calculates Shorts revenue

  1. Ads shown between Shorts in the Shorts feed go into a monthly pool.
  2. Part of the pool covers music licensing for Shorts that use licensed music.
  3. The rest is split between channels by their share of eligible Shorts views.
  4. Creators keep 45% of the amount allocated to them. YouTube keeps 55%.

What makes Shorts RPM higher or lower

  • Viewer country: views from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Western Europe pay the most. See YouTube RPM by country.
  • Music: Shorts with licensed music share revenue with the rights holders, so original audio keeps more for you.
  • Season: ad prices rise in Q4 (October to December) and drop in January.
  • Eligible views: repeated loops and some views from non-monetized regions may not count.

Shorts monetization requirements

To earn from Shorts ads you need to be in the YouTube Partner Program: 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days (or 4,000 public watch hours on long videos). From 1 February 2027, new channels need 20 million Shorts views or 8,000 watch hours. Details: Shorts monetization requirements and the 2027 rule change.

Skip the 10 million views

Reaching 10 million Shorts views in 90 days is hard for a new channel, and the bar doubles in 2027. Our monetized YouTube channels are already in the Partner Program, so your Shorts and long videos can earn from day one. Prefer to grow your own? Frequently asked questions

How much does YouTube pay for Shorts per 1,000 views?

Most monetized creators report a Shorts RPM between $0.03 and $0.07 per 1,000 views, with an observed range of about $0.01 to $0.16. Long videos usually pay 10 to 50 times more per 1,000 views.

How much do 1 million YouTube Shorts views pay?

At a typical Shorts RPM of $0.03 to $0.07, 1 million Shorts views pay about $30 to $70. At $0.05 (our average setting) it is about $50.

How does YouTube calculate Shorts earnings?

Ads shown between Shorts go into a pool. YouTube splits the part allocated to creators by each channel's share of eligible Shorts views, and the creator keeps 45% of their allocated amount. Views that use licensed music share the pool with the music rights holders.

How many Shorts views do I need to get monetized?

To earn from Shorts ads you need 1,000 subscribers and 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days (or 4,000 public watch hours on long videos). From 1 February 2027 this rises to 20 million Shorts views or 8,000 watch hours for new channels.

Why do Shorts pay so much less than long videos?

A Short is seen for a few seconds and ads run between Shorts, not inside them, so there is far less ad inventory per view. Long videos can show several ads per view and earn from higher-paying ad formats.

Is this calculator accurate?

It is an estimate. Your real RPM depends on your viewers' countries, your niche, the season and how much of your audience watches with ads. Use the low and high settings to see a realistic range, then check your own RPM in YouTube Studio.
