YouTube Account Recovery: How to Get a Hacked Channel Back

There is no separate YouTube password. Your channel lives inside a Google Account, so YouTube account recovery always starts with getting that Google Account back. Once you are signed in again, you clean up whatever a hacker changed on the channel and, if you are eligible, ask YouTube Creator Support for help. This guide walks through each official route in order, what to have ready, how long each step can take and how to stop it happening again.
Lost access or hacked? Find your situation first
| Situation | Signs | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Forgot password | Wrong password, but nothing on the channel has changed | Google account recovery |
| Forgot which email owns the channel | You cannot remember the Gmail you used | Google username recovery |
| Hacked | Password or recovery details changed, new videos, new name or picture | Google account recovery, then the hacked channel steps |
| Hacked and terminated | Channel removed after strange uploads | Recover the account first, then appeal the termination |
Based on the YouTube Help article Recover a hacked YouTube channel and Google Account Help.
How do I recover my YouTube account if I forgot my password?
Use Google's account recovery page and answer the questions as well as you can. According to Google Account Help, there is no limit to the number of times you can try, and wrong guesses do not end the process. When you are asked, set a new password you have not used on this account before.
If you forgot the email address itself, Google has a separate username recovery flow. Have a recovery phone number or recovery email ready, plus the full name on the account, and Google shows the usernames that match.
What to prepare before you start recovery
Google's page Tips to complete account recovery steps gives clear advice. Following it raises your chances of passing the checks on the first try.
- Use a device you normally sign in on, such as your usual laptop or phone.
- Use the browser you normally use, from a place you usually sign in, such as home or work.
- Do not skip questions. If you are not sure, give your best guess.
- For old passwords, enter the most recent one you remember, exactly, with the right capital letters.
- Have access to any recovery email or phone you added in the past. If you cannot reach one, choose Try another way.
- Check your spam folder for an email titled Your Google support inquiry.
How to recover a hacked YouTube channel step by step
YouTube Help splits this into three stages: get the Google Account back, revert the hacker's changes, then lower the risk of it happening again.
- Recover the Google Account. If you can still sign in, change the password and secure the account straight away. If you cannot, go through Google account recovery as described above.
- Ask everyone with access to the channel, such as managers and editors, to secure their own Google Accounts too. A hacker may have come in through one of them.
- Open YouTube Studio and run the channel cleanup tool. It is available to owners and managers. It lists unusual activity, you confirm which changes you made, and it corrects the rest.
- Check who has access to the channel and remove anyone you do not know, both in channel permissions and in the Brand Account.
- Delete any videos you did not upload, unless they already have a strike or claim. In that case, contact YouTube instead of deleting.
- Restore the channel name, handle, profile picture and banner, and check video privacy settings, playlists, comments, AdSense and any new Community Guidelines strikes on your dashboard.
- Use the hacked channel assistant in the YouTube Help Center. YouTube says it is available in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
YouTube Help explains that changes made through the cleanup tool are usually made within a few hours. You get an email with a tracking link and can edit your review for about 30 days. One warning from that page: you can edit changes you marked as authorized, but you cannot undo changes you marked as unauthorized, so go slowly.
How do I contact YouTube Creator Support about a hacked channel?
According to YouTube Help, eligible creators, such as members of the YouTube Partner Program, can contact the Creator Support team once they have recovered their Google Account. Use the contact option linked from that YouTube Help page. If you cannot reach Creator Support, YouTube points you to @TeamYouTube on X.
Creator Support cannot skip the Google Account step for you. Recover the account first, then reach out with the details below so they can act quickly.
- The channel URL and handle.
- Roughly when the hack happened and what changed.
- Which videos, name changes or strikes were not made by you.
- Screenshots of security emails from Google or YouTube, if you have them.
How long does YouTube account recovery take?
Google and YouTube do not publish a fixed time for the whole process. These are the timings the official pages do give:
| Step | What the official pages say |
|---|---|
| Google account recovery attempts | No limit on attempts. If it still fails after you change recovery info, try again in a few days. |
| Changes to recovery info | May take up to 7 days to take effect (Google Account Help). |
| Cleanup tool changes | Usually within a few hours. You can edit your review for about 30 days. |
| YouTube's help with hacks | Only for incidents in the past 9 months, because of data retention. |
| Creator Support reply | No published time. |
The 9-month window is the one to watch. YouTube Help says incidents older than that may not be recoverable, so start the moment you notice something wrong.
What if my channel was terminated after the hack?
Hackers often upload scam or spam videos, which can get a channel terminated. YouTube Help says you can appeal once you have recovered your Google Account, and that an appeal may not be accepted if the account recovery is incomplete. So the order is always: recover, clean up, then appeal.
Can I recover a deleted YouTube channel?
If the channel sat on a Brand Account and that Brand Account was deleted recently, Google Account Help says an owner can restore it from the Deleted accounts option in the Brand Accounts section. You must have been an owner for 7 days to delete or restore one. Google also warns that deleting a Brand Account removes its content across all Google services, so treat this as a last-chance option, not a safety net.
How to stop it happening again
YouTube Help lists a few protections, and they work best together.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification, ideally with a passkey. YouTube also requires 2-Step Verification for the YouTube Partner Program.
- Turn on Enhanced Safe Browsing in your Google Account.
- Add a recovery phone and recovery email that only you control.
- Give people access with channel permissions in YouTube Studio instead of sharing passwords.
- Use a separate email for YouTube than for your other accounts, so one breach does not expose everything.
- Do not open files or sign-in links from people you do not know, even when they look like sponsorship offers.
Could not get the channel back?
Sometimes recovery fails, especially when the hack is older than 9 months or the recovery details were changed long ago. If your old channel is gone and you are in good standing with YouTube, you can start a new project on a fresh, clean channel. Building one to the YouTube Partner Program thresholds takes time. A channel that is already monetized is another option. This is a new start, not a way back onto YouTube after a termination: YouTube's rules do not let a terminated creator own or create other channels.
Can I recover my YouTube channel without my email or phone number?
Sometimes. Google's recovery flow asks other questions, such as old passwords, and works best from a device and place you normally use. Choose Try another way when you cannot reach a recovery option. There is no guarantee without any recovery details.
Is there a phone number to call for YouTube account recovery?
No. Google Account Help says you cannot call Google for help signing in, and Google does not work with any service that claims to offer account or password support.
How do I contact YouTube if my channel was hacked?
Recover your Google Account first. Then use the hacked channel assistant in the YouTube Help Center, or contact Creator Support from YouTube Studio if you are eligible, for example as a YouTube Partner Program member. You can also reach @TeamYouTube on X.
Will I lose my subscribers if my channel was hacked?
Not usually. Subscribers stay with the channel. The risk is what the hacker does with it, such as uploading content that leads to strikes or a termination. That is why YouTube Help says to delete unauthorized uploads and revert changes quickly.
Can I recover a channel that was hacked more than a year ago?
Probably not with YouTube's help. YouTube Help says it supports hacking incidents within the past 9 months because of its data retention policy, and older ones may not be recoverable.
Should I pay someone to recover my YouTube channel?
No. Recovery only happens through Google and YouTube's own tools. People who promise to get your channel back for money are a common follow-up scam after a hack.
