YouTube Channel Terminated? Why It Happens and How to Appeal

YouTube Channel Terminated? Why It Happens and How to Appeal - cover image
Quick answer: YouTube terminates a channel for repeated Community Guidelines or Terms of Service violations (usually three strikes in 90 days), three copyright strikes, a single case of severe abuse, or a channel dedicated to breaking a policy. You can appeal from YouTube Studio within 1 year of the termination, and you can submit two appeals in that year. If your channel was hacked, recover your Google Account first, then appeal. While terminated, you are not allowed to use, own or create other YouTube channels.

Finding your channel terminated is one of the worst moments a creator can have. The good news is that YouTube has a clear appeal process, and some terminations are reversed. This guide explains why channels are terminated, how to appeal step by step, how long it takes, what happens to your earnings, what to do if the channel was hacked first, and what your options are if the appeal fails.

Demonetized vs terminated YouTube channel: the channel stays up vs the channel is removed, with appeal windows
Demonetized means no ads but the channel stays up. Terminated means the channel is removed, with up to 2 appeals in a year.

Why YouTube terminates channels

YouTube's Help Center page "Channel or account terminations" lists three main reasons, and its copyright strike page adds a fourth.

  • Repeated violations of the Community Guidelines or Terms of Service, across any kind of content. In practice that usually means three strikes in the same 90 days.
  • A single case of severe abuse. YouTube gives predatory behaviour, spam and pornography as examples. This can lead to termination without any warning.
  • A channel dedicated to a policy violation, such as hate speech, harassment or impersonation.
  • Three copyright strikes. YouTube's Copyright strike basics page says the account and any linked channels are then subject to termination.

Spam is a common surprise. Fake engagement, such as bought subscribers or views, misleading metadata and mass-uploaded scam content all fall under YouTube's spam and deceptive practices rules.

How strikes add up to a termination

According to YouTube's Community Guidelines strike basics page, the first violation is usually only a warning. If you complete an optional policy training, the warning expires after 90 days. A further violation brings a strike, which blocks uploads, live streams and other features for one week. A second strike in the same 90 days blocks them for two weeks. Three strikes in the same 90-day period may get the channel permanently removed. Each strike expires 90 days after it was issued.

Copyright strikes work on their own track. They expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School and have fewer than three.

What happens when your channel is terminated

  • You get an email explaining the reason.
  • YouTube Partner Program members are no longer entitled to earn revenue from the channel.
  • You lose access to YouTube Studio, except for the page with your termination details.
  • You can no longer download your YouTube content, although you can still download your Google data.
  • You are not allowed to use, own or create any other YouTube channels. YouTube's page says this includes channels you create or acquire, and channels where you are repeatedly or prominently featured.

What happens to your AdSense earnings?

YouTube's termination page says Partner Program members are no longer entitled to earn revenue once a channel is terminated, and that YouTube may withhold unpaid earnings. It may also refund advertisers or viewers in some cases. In other words, do not count on an unpaid balance being paid out.

If the termination came with an invalid traffic finding, the AdSense for YouTube rules also apply: YouTube Help says a disabled account may get a final payment for revenue not identified as invalid, after a 30-day hold, and you can sign in to AdSense for YouTube to check the remaining balance. If your appeal succeeds and the channel is restored, check your AdSense account and contact AdSense support about any balance that was held.

How to appeal a YouTube channel termination

  1. On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio with the terminated channel's account and open the channel appeal page.
  2. Click Begin Review under the termination information. You may be asked to verify your account.
  3. Read the reason for the termination, then click Next.
  4. Select Start Appeal and click Next.
  5. Enter a contact email and explain why you think the decision was wrong.
  6. Click Submit. If you cannot appeal this way, YouTube points you to its contact form for suspended accounts.

YouTube says creators have up to 1 year from the termination date to appeal, and can submit two appeals within that year. Make each one count. Keep the appeal short, calm and specific: name the video or policy YouTube cited, explain in a few sentences why it does not break that policy, and mention any context a reviewer might miss, such as a licence for music or the fact that a hacker uploaded the content.

What to write in a termination appeal

  • One line on who you are and what the channel is about.
  • The policy or video YouTube named, in YouTube's own words.
  • Why it does not break that policy, or what context the reviewer missed, in two or three sentences.
  • Any proof you can point to: a music licence, the date your account was hacked, a recovery confirmation.
  • What you have changed, if you made a genuine mistake.
  • No anger, no threats and no long history of the channel. Reviewers read a lot of appeals.

How long does a termination appeal take?

YouTube does not publish a standard time. Its Help Center says you can see the anticipated review time for your appeal in YouTube Studio, and that you will get the result by email. If the appeal is accepted, you are sent back to your Studio dashboard. If it is rejected, you are signed out after you accept the decision. In November 2025, TeamYouTube told a creator on X that appeals are manually reviewed, so it can take time to get a response, as reported by PPC Land. In the same report, some creators said their appeals were rejected within minutes, while one said an appeal had been under review for 37 days.

Can you appeal again after two rejections?

Not within the same year. YouTube's termination page says creators can only submit two appeals within the 1-year period, and that there is also a limit on how many times a single termination can be appealed. After that, the only official route back to YouTube is the second chance pilot described below, and only if your case is eligible.

Was your channel hacked? Recover the account before you appeal

Hacked-account recovery and a termination appeal are two different processes. If a hacker took over your channel and uploaded spam or scam videos, YouTube may have terminated it for that content. YouTube's Recover a hacked YouTube channel page says to recover and secure your Google Account first, then look for an email about appealing the termination. It warns that an appeal may not be accepted if the account recovery is incomplete.

  • Use Google's account recovery flow and set a new, strong password.
  • Run Google's Security Checkup, remove unknown devices and turn on 2-Step Verification.
  • Revert anything the hacker changed: delete videos you did not upload and restore the channel name and picture.
  • Use YouTube's hacked channel assistant in the Help Center. YouTube says it is available in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and that it can only help with incidents from the past 9 months.

If the appeal fails: YouTube's second chance pilot

On October 9, 2025, YouTube announced on its official blog a pilot that lets some terminated creators request a new channel. Eligible creators see a "request a new channel" option in YouTube Studio on desktop one year after the termination; they can still appeal during that year. The pilot does not cover creators terminated for copyright infringement, for breaking the Creator Responsibility policies, or who deleted their own channel or Google account. A new channel starts from zero: subscribers do not come back, old videos can only be uploaded again if they follow current guidelines, and the channel has to meet the YouTube Partner Program requirements again to earn.

What you should not do is open a new channel on your own while you are terminated. YouTube's termination rules forbid it, and that includes buying a channel to get around a ban. A channel run by a terminated creator is at risk of being removed too.

How to avoid a termination

  • Take your first warning seriously and complete the policy training so it expires.
  • Never upload risky content while you have two active strikes. Wait for one to expire.
  • Use only music, clips and footage you have the rights to, and complete Copyright School after a copyright strike.
  • Avoid misleading titles, mass-produced repeat uploads and bought views or subscribers.
  • Turn on 2-Step Verification for every owner and manager of the channel, and remove access you no longer need.

For new projects only

This section is not for creators who are terminated. If you are under a termination, YouTube's rules apply to you as a person, and buying or using another channel breaks them. Appeal, or wait for the second chance pilot.

If you are in good standing and starting a separate new project, for example a business brand or a new niche run by a team member with no termination, a channel that is already monetized is one option. Ours are already in the YouTube Partner Program with 1,000+ organic subscribers. Within 12–24 hours your own Gmail is added as an owner of the channel. YouTube lets a new owner become primary owner after 7 days, and we help you take primary ownership and remove every other owner.

For new projects by creators in good standing, not a way around a termination: monetized channels for $399.99 (Asian & Worldwide audience) or $499.99 (US, UK & Europe audience). Delivered within 12–24 hours. 30-day replacement or refund, plus 30 days of support.See monetized YouTube channels →

Why was my YouTube channel terminated?

Usually for three Community Guidelines strikes in 90 days, three copyright strikes, a single case of severe abuse such as spam, or a channel dedicated to breaking a policy. The email from YouTube names the reason.

Can you recover a terminated YouTube channel?

Yes, if your appeal is accepted. A successful appeal restores the channel. You can appeal from YouTube Studio within 1 year, with two appeals allowed in that year.

How long does a YouTube termination appeal take?

YouTube does not publish a fixed time. YouTube Studio shows the anticipated review time for your appeal, and the result arrives by email. Creators report anything from minutes to more than a month.

Do I get my AdSense money if my channel is terminated?

Not necessarily. YouTube's termination page says terminated channels are no longer entitled to earn revenue and that YouTube may withhold unpaid earnings.

Can I make a new channel after termination?

Not on your own. YouTube's rules forbid terminated creators from using, creating or acquiring other channels. Some creators can request a new channel one year after termination through YouTube's second chance pilot.

My channel was hacked and then terminated. What should I do?

Recover and secure your Google Account first, then appeal. YouTube says an appeal may not be accepted if the account recovery is incomplete.
